Do you want to navigate this snake-filled backwater known as “Earth” unscathed? Then you’d better keep a reliable pistol close at hand. And if that pistol’s chambered for 22 WMR (also known as 22 Magnum), then you’d better load it with Hornady Critical Defense.

This round is MADE for smaller 22 Mag handguns (though it’ll work in full-size pistols and rifles, too). The 45 grain bullet is a mite heavier (a feature which promotes deeper penetration through flesh), but its muzzle velocity isn’t outrageously low at 1,000 fps. Hornady wanted to represent the round’s performance more accurately to subcompact pistol carriers, so they went ahead and recorded the velocity with a 1-7/8” test barrel.

Several special touches make this ammo extra effective for personal protection. The bullet? An FTX jacketed hollow point, which contains a polymer plug that preserves the bullet’s capacity for terminal expansion by preventing fabric from getting stuck inside of it. The propellant? Low flash, which will come in very handy if you ever have to empty a magazine or cylinder where it’s dark.
