The 22 WMR is not a self-defense cartridge … unless it’s loaded by a hand as masterful as Hornady’s. The Nebraskan legend produces Critical Duty 22 Magnum so you can do one thing and one thing only: save your own sorry keister if it’s ever in trouble.

This round’s loaded with a heavier bullet. It’s one-eighth more massive than the 40 grains 22 Mag’s usually loaded with, which lets it acquire more momentum in flight. This helps the bullet stab deeper through flesh. Very helpful. Note that Hornady recorded this round’s apparently low muzzle velocity with a 1-7/8” test barrel. It’s a realistic measure, because this ammo’s intended for compact and subcompact pistols.

Its weight and velocity aren’t the bullet’s most interesting features. As an FTX, the jacketed hollow point seats a polymer plug in its nose cavity. Its purpose? To keep fabric particles from getting all jammed up inside the nose cavity, wherein they deprive the bullet of its ability to expand.
