We once received a letter from the Varmint Protection League asking us to please stop selling Hornady’s Varmint Express 22 Magnum ammunition. We pinned it to a tree and shot it. But we can see why the varmints’ allies strongly dislike this cartridge. It is loaded with the V-MAX, which many consider to be the greatest varmint hunting bullet on Earth. We agree with them.

The V-MAX supplies outstanding accuracy thanks to its polymer tip, AMP jacket and swaged lead core. The core’s nose cavity seats the base of the polymer tip – an arrangement which allows the V-MAX to deliver terminal ballistics that can only be described as explosive. The bullet consistently expands at velocities as low as 1,600 fps, which this round’s 30 grain 0.095 G1 BC bullet can do until 77 yards. Of course, once it has achieved a 2,200 fps muzzle velocity out of a 24” barrel, the bullet will not go subsonic until far, far beyond 125 yards.
