Everyone has a grandpa who could kill a tom at 50 yards using only a rubber band and a sewing needle. Sadly, the apples are falling pretty far from the trees these days. (Silent Generation – we’re looking at you, too.) But that’s okay! If you’re not as tough as peepaw, you can still hunt using Winchester Long Beard XR ammunition.

This shell’s a monster. Three-and-a-half inches of 4 dram equivalent “Lok’d & Lethal” 12 Gauge fury, packed with two full ounces of #5 shot. That’s copper-plated shot: mostly lead, and armored to promote sphericity retention under pressure (which there is a lot of inside so long a shot column during ignition). Rigid, spherical pellets soar straighter and strike harder, and they soak deeper into the turkey as well.

The aforementioned “Lok’d” actually means something. It nods to this shell’s Shot-Lok Technology! All of the shot is suspended in hard (yet brittle) resin. Ignition pulverizes the substance, in which powdered state it fills in all the gaps between the individual shot pellets. That prevents them from mashing into and contorting one another, which promotes even tighter patterning and harder impact still!
