• Q: What does the "+P" mean in the name of the ammo? I'm new to guns and ammo, and I don't know if the +P is something I should avoid if I'm just looking for some regular ammo for self-defense and home protection. If I'm just looking for ammo to keep in my gun in case an intruder breaks in and threatens my family, does it matter if I buy +P ammo?

  A: Thanks for reaching out Adam! The 38 Special +P cartridge's chamber pressure is approximately 14% higher than that of a standard 38 Special round. "+P" indicates that a cartridge is "overpressure" (but also that it still comforms to industry specifications for factory-loaded ammo). The 38 Special +P cartridge produces stronger recoil, and also accelerates wear and tear on a handgun's barrel (albeit not dramatically). However, the 38 Special +P bullet also exhibits a flatter trajectory and reaches its target with more striking energy. In a few words, the 38 Special +P hits its target harder. Note that overpressure ammo is not recommended for older revolvers (i.e. antiques), as they were not designed to handle the hotter chamber pressure. I personally prefer 38 Special +P for self-defense. It is a relatively weak cartridge that benefits from any added power, and I do not find the recoil is noticeably greater. I'd encourage you to try this ammo out before you rely on it to defend your family, which is exactly what it is designed to do.
