This 40 S&W round by Hornady is a jack of all trades. It’s designed to function well in any firearm capable of chambering it, and its subsonic muzzle velocity would complement a suppressor particularly well. Its accuracy will suit the competitive shooter, yet its devastating terminal performance makes it as effective for varmint hunting as it does self-defense.

Hornady gave this round their proprietary 180 grain XTP jacketed hollow point bullet. Its highly concentric jacket and swaged lead core both promote balanced flight. Its shielded nose cavity and base prevent feeding issues and deformation during ignition, respectively.

The XTP’s jacket is notched, enabling it to split apart into uniform sections which promote reliable, low velocity terminal expansion. Its jacket is also drawn with varying thicknesses, yet another factor that lends itself to controlled expansion.

Hornady loads an American Gunner round with a select brass case, a versatile Boxer primer, and a charge of low residue propellant. This cartridge’s primer and propellant are matched to deliver a consistent muzzle velocity of 950 fps – not so fast as to punish the shooter with recoil, yet not so underpowered as to greatly impact its trajectory or terminal effect.
