Winchester’s 5.56x45 ammunition is always just the ticket for serious training and informal plinking with a wide range of rifles including AR-15s. But when you stock up on Winchester’s 5.56x45 M855 ammo, you’ll have extra assurance that you can defend yourself against armored threats!

See the green paint on this round’s FMJ bullet? That’s the sign of the penetrator, a solid steel insert which comprises the frontal half of the M855 bullet’s core. Steel is much harder than lead, hence the M855 round’s ability to pierce sheet metal and penetrate well over a foot deep into soft tissue.

The M855 round’s 62 grain bullet is heavier than usual. Its muzzle velocity is accordingly slower, but it compensates for this shortcoming with higher downrange velocities than a standard 55 grain bullet could pull off. A 1:7 twist barrel is acceptable for a 62 grain 5.56 bullet, but a 1:8 or 1:9 twist is optimal!

Needless to say, this round’s bullet will attract a magnet. Some commercial ranges don’t like that, so check your preferred range’s policy ahead of time before you bring this ammo there.

Some people see this ammo’s Boxer-primed brass cases and ask if they were previously fired. They are brand new – their discoloration is only cosmetic, and the byproduct of heat-treatment which makes brass more robust.
