Most AR-15 enthusiasts are already familiar with 5.56x45 M193 ammunition: 55 grain nonmagnetic FMJ that’s suitable for all your target shooting needs. But this 5.56x45 M855 ammo by Winchester is also great for range training, plinking and even home defense!

The key thing to know about the M855 bullet is that it will attract a magnet. That’s the doing of its core, which is comprised of a solid lead rear section and a solid steel front section. The penetrator tip enables the M855 bullet to reliably pierce sheet metal barriers including vehicle doors.

The M855 bullet weighs seven grains more than the M193. This gives it a flatter trajectory several hundred yards out, as well as a superior sectional density (which means it penetrates soft tissue more efficiently). The M855 will exhibit its best accuracy in conjunction with a 1:8 or 1:9 twist barrel.

This is American-made, military-grade, NATO spec ammo. It’s loaded for Winchester by the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant and features non-corrosive Boxer primers and reloadable brass cases. Those heat-treated cases may not be shiny, but they’re durable enough to sustain multiple reloads!
