Most American firearm enthusiasts are familiar with two types of 9mm ammo: standard, and +P. These variants’ max chamber pressures are specified by SAAMI at 35,000 psi and 38,500 psi, respectively.

But SAAMI isn’t the only authority on 9mm ammo. There is also NATO, which specifies the maximum chamber pressure for its own 9mm ammo at 36,500 psi.

What does that mean? Essentially this: 9mm NATO is an excellent middle ground between 9mm and 9mm +P. Its trajectory isn’t quite as flat as a +P load’s, but it is indeed flatter than a standard pressure one’s. Its recoil’s not quite as harsh as an overpressure load’s, but it does indeed kick a touch harder than a standard pressure one’s.

Apart from all that, this is otherwise very normal target ammo. Winchester blessed each cartridge with a lead-core, brass-jacketed FMJ: nonmagnetic, and able to clear a 4” barrel at a higher-than-standard muzzle velocity of 1,200 fps. These cartridges’ brass cases are fresh as spring dandelions, too, so they’re worth incorporating into any 9mm handloading project that looms ahead on the horizon.
