38 Special Ammo Info

Introduced by Smith & Wesson in 1898 as an alternative to the 38 Long Colt, boasting a heavier bullet and increased power charge.

Most commonly loaded with bullet weights ranging from 125 grain to 158 grain but some heavier/lighter bullets are commercially available.

The cartridge is a centerfire round most often used in revolvers.

Also goes by .38 Smith & Wesson Special, .38 Sp, .38 S&W Special, .38 Spl, and .38 Spc. Note: Not to be confused with the older, less-common .38 S&W or the .38 Super.

Was the standard issued caliber in most US law enforcement agencies from the 1920’s to the 1990’s.

38 Special can be shot in most 357 Mag guns, but 357 Mag cannot be shot in 38 Special guns.

38 Special is a popular choice to shoot in 357 Mag revolvers for range training because of their lower pressure (and therefore lower recoil) and affordability compared to the 357 Mag.

The designation “+P” signifies overpressure ammunition which are loaded to a higher pressure than is standard for that cartridge. Note: overpressure ammunition should be used only in firearms designed for their use.
