There’s 38 Special +P ammunition, and then there’s Speer Law Enforcement Gold Dot ammunition – arguably some of the best (if not the best) 38 Special +P on the market. And make no mistake: civilians can buy this ammo!

Speer loads this +P round with enough propellant to generate higher-than-standard chamber pressure. It boasts a high muzzle velocity (945 fps out of a 4” vented test barrel) and high striking energy (233 ft lbs at 25 yards) because of it. Just take caution that this ammunition is unsafe to fire in 38 Special revolvers that aren’t specifically rated for +P.

Speer’s Gold Dot is the first bonded handgun bullet ever to hit the commercial market. Its fused jacket is the reason why the jacketed hollow point conserves virtually all of its weight during impact and subsequent penetration of the threat – and also the reason why it consistently tunnels to an effective depth for defensive applications. The Gold Dot’s hollow point nose cavity is the product of a dual-stage formation process. It is programmed to commence terminal expansion under a wide range of circumstances, even if it must pierce a barrier before reaching the threat.

This ammo’s high-quality JHPs, responsive primers and low-fouling powder charges all reside in nickel-plated brass cases. In addition to reducing metal-on-metal friction, nickel protects the underlying brass from corrosion in storage and in the cylinder.
